There are certain terminologies in the CrossFit world that you will want to understand to improve your experience. The term Rx is one of these trigger words that you will hear often among CrossFit enthusiasts. So what does it mean and how is it used?
The term Rx means that you are accomplishing a workout “as prescribed”. Most CrossFit workouts have a specific number of reps and weight you need to use for the workout. Once you complete the workout with the appropriate amount of reps and weight, you can say that you have completed the Rx for the workout. This can be a very challenging task, especially if the workout you are doing involves heavy weights.
How to Rx a WOD
To Rx a WOD is a daunting task, so you must tackle the workout at a pace that is right for you. You will probably not Rx a WOD the first time you attempt it unless you are a very good athlete. In order to successfully Rx a workout, you need to scale back the weights and reps in order to build up slowly to the max amount of weight. This approach is a good way to conquer a WOD, as it lets you challenge yourself even though you are not going to Rx the workout.
Scale a workout
So how can you scale a workout to eventually reach your goal of getting the Rx? If you are working with weights, try going very light just to practice the movements of the workout and get a rhythm down. Once you have completed a scaled version of the WOD, you can incrementally start to add 5 or 10 pounds to the weight you are using until you reach the prescribed weight.
Scaling a WOD is how you improve your performance over time. Strength training is about going up one level at a time. If you become impatient and try lifting more weight than you can manage, you may not be able to complete the workout, discouraging yourself in the process. When you implement small, achievable goals into your workouts, you may not see an immediate change in your performance but it will surely happen over time.
